Peter Colt: A New Series, A New Detective
A handful of coins. Mud boots. Jameson whiskey. The ferry to Nantucket. A 50-cent piece. A vintage Luke Skywalker action figure.
To understand how these clues tie into author Peter Colt’s new Detective Tommy Kelly mystery, immerse yourself in his newly released crime novel, COLD ISLAND.
The author of six Detective Andy Roark crime novels brings us something altogether different with his new series featuring leading man Detective Tommy Kelly.
I didn’t see it coming. Peter Colt has crafted his story so expertly that the last several chapters were a complete surprise. It made me want to re-read the earlier pages just to uncover the clues I so clearly missed. COLD ISLAND, the first book in the new Detective Tommy Kelly series, is sure to be a hit. Set on the island of Nantucket, this thirty-five-year-old cold case involving the abduction of little boys is a perfect vehicle to introduce Detective Kelly to an awaiting fan base.
I asked the author what made his new protagonist Tommy Kelly stand apart from Andy Roark, and here’s what he said:
"When I started Cold Island I had written three Andy Roark novels, by the time I finished it I had written six. I had lived with Andy and had gotten to know him pretty well. While he's a great character, he's not a great detective. He lacks the type of patience and focus that is needed for a thirty-five year old cold case with limited evidence. Tommy Kelly on the other hand is a very good detective, focused, skilled but not as much fun as Andy. In fact, other than their love of Irish whiskey, the only thing that the two detectives have in common is that they are both facing their demons while trying to solve cases."
Peter Colt’s crisp, succinct writing style is rounded out with literary-level descriptors, helping the reader experience (see, hear, taste, feel) everything the main character is experiencing. This novel is a slow-burn rather than an adrenaline-rushed page turner, and I appreciate the author’s ability to take his readers on an immersive journey while still providing enough plot twists and turns to keep them wondering what will happen next. I found this novel highly entertaining and recommend it to anyone who loves broody, reflective detective novels.
Many thanks to Peter and his team for the advanced readers copy of COLD ISLAND as well as the high-resolution images.
